We’ve lived so long under the spell of hierarchy—from god-kings to feudal lords to party bosses—that only recently have we awakened to see not only that “regular” citizens have the capacity for self-governance, but that without their engagement our huge global crises cannot be addressed. The changes needed for human society simply to survive, let alone thrive, are so profound that the only way we will move toward them is if we ourselves, regular citizens, feel meaningful ownership of solutions through direct engagement. Our problems are too big, interrelated, and pervasive to yield to directives from on high.

Bill Moyers Journal 4-23-2010 (2-30m videos and script)

In case you missed it, this Bill Moyers program, the second to his last regular PBS program, features two outstanding guests: 1) Bill Black, whom I also posted yesterday in another interview, in which he again explains his view that the recent financial collapse was mostly brought about by sheer fraud on the part of the large financial institutions, particularly Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs; 2) and Michael J. Copps, FCC Commissioner, who warns about corporate threats to the internet.

These are both excellent interviews which offer some real and rare insights on their respective, and critically important subjects.
